This HSP loved the book AND the narrator.

As a HSP, I desperately wanted this book (and I highly recommend getting the print version as well - there's just too much in here that you'll miss with having the Audible version alone). The awful reviews of the narrator almost scared me away, but my stubborn nature let me plunge ahead and put the book in my cart. I'm so glad I did. I don't know why the other reviewers found the narrator so awful. I quite liked her and found her tone soothing and just right for the book. I won't extol her virtues. Try the sample and make up your own mind. She sounds in the rest of the book just as she does in the sample. You can find plenty about this book elsewhere on the web and on Dr. Aron's own site, so I won't take up space here reviewing it, but if you're an HSP or have an HSP in your life, it's essential reading/listening and will help you understand the HSP nature. As for the narrator, I gave her full marks. I loved her and found she added to the book's content, and was certainly not as others have stated, a distraction, but that is my opinion. Try the sample for yourself. At any rate, don't let the others make up your mind for you. It's a great book and certainly worth a listen.

Good stuff

I was concerned about the narrator voice, but I got used to it and later even enjoyed it. Do not be discouraged by other reviewers in this matter. Of course it is individual stuff, but aiming for more flexibility is a good thing you might catch while learning about this treat. The book helped me to understand many things from my past, the decisions and interactions and make a shift in perceiving myself as an individual and in social structure. Interesting approaches and empowering knowledge make this book an essential step on the path of self development. Really glad I have found it. I will be listening again.

just ok

the book had some good info and tips for sensitive people but the reader had really inconsistent volume in her speech. clearly, whoever paired the two was not a HSP!

I learned more about myself as well as my friends and family. It’s invaluable to read this book: even if you don’t think you are an HSP - you know someone who is.

I'm not broken!! (And wonderful narrator)

This book blew my mind. There were so many parts where I felt like she was reading my own biography. I have struggled to understand why I am so sensitive and easily overwhelmed, and why I struggle so much in life because of it. Her explanations and practical advice were extremely helpful and resonated with me. It's not your typical cognitive-behavioral advice (which is good stuff), it's about understanding and accepting that physical and emotional sensitivity are part of the way you naturally are, a unique type of human being. It's not a bad thing, there is an important purpose for it. It's about embracing this as a positive trait and learning to work with it.

The way she celebrates the inherent strengths of HSP's was deeply comforting and affirming to me on an existential level. I kept having a mental image of her as a female Professor Xavier telling mutants that they aren't defective, they have a gift and they can use it.

The narrator was a pleasure to listen to. I usually listen to books on 1.35 speed, which made her sound peppy in a charming way. Regardless, I have to say she's one of the best narrator's I've ever listened to.

a bit formal

insightful, wonderfully read. isn't geared towards spouses of HSP. rigidity was unexpected but not negatively

This book helped me put things in perspective from my past and is helping me look at my coping mechanisms. I accept myself more because of this book.

Best Self Medication for HSPs

It is a monument to the idiocy of the non hsps in the world that the concept of a hsp has been hitherto unknown. Thanks to Elaine for writing this book. I almost cried reading it as I am sure many did.

About narrator

Before I purchased this book I read the reviews. As always they are reviews that are powerful positive and others that are not. Amazingly, the negative reviews was about the narrator voice and her condescending tone.
The majority of the positive reviews were in regards to the content of the book, which I do agreed. Although the book and its data it’s a bit old the main understanding about identifying HSP’s around us, and even better come to realization that “I, myself “ as some certain degree of HSP.
Anyway, going back to the narrator, I personally did not find a problem with the tone of her voice of the intonation of her sentences. I just accepted that was whom she was!
I could understand WHY some of the people placing a negative review about the book base on the narrator. Those people are as HSP’s with sensitive auditory stimulation.
Judge for yourself!
If you do not like the audio book I definitely recommend a paperback book, the content of it is what it matters!
